18.01.2010: CS, Turbomeca and the Pau-Pyrénées Urban Community has opened a High Performance Computing Center in the city of Pau

The Pau-Pyrénées Urban Community, CS Communication & Systèmes and Turbomeca announced the opening of a High Performance Computing Center in Pau to provide businesses in the Aquitaine and Midi Pyrénées regions in southwestern France. The Simulation Center has received financial support from the Pau-Pyrénées Urban Community. The official inauguration of the Simulation Center will take place on February 4, 2010, with the mayor of Pau, Martine Lignières-Cassou.

The Simulation Center is a regional centre. Its primary purpose is to make numerical simulation available to all companies needing it. High performance computing center's costs have been optimized and the services provided match the demand, thereby giving  access to SMEs looking for a competitive advantage by the use of numerical simulation.

Governed jointly by three partners, CS will be in charge of this HPC center operations. It proposes a global service dedicated to numerical simulation and open to all regional industrial players, in particular those operating in the aerospace sector.

The HPC center is equipped with the latest-generation super computer that hosts innovating simulation and modeling solutions for optimizing the numerical design process, in particular services platform developed within MOSART program. The following services are provided by the center at a competitive cost:
• powerful, shared c
omputing resources,
• 'Application Service Provider' mode access to simulation applications,
• comprehensive numerical simulation and design studies (structures, computational fluid mechanics, aerothermodynamics and more),
• application porting and providing service and software optimization hybrid clusters (CPU & GPU).

This solution will enable SMEs to access more easily to numerical simulation, as a lever for innovation and competitiveness though difficult to implement for cost, expertise and training reasons.

This new initiative is being undertaken in conjunction with the efforts made in other competition clusters, in particular System@tic (Paris region), as part of a national numerical simulation strategy.

For CS, the HPC Center will offer businesses in the Midi-Pyrénées and Aquitaine regions added value simulation services at optimal levels of quality, cost, lead times and data protection. CS is a major player in the Aerospace Valley and System@tic competition clusters and is a partner of Ter@tec (European center of simulation and high-performance computing, created by the CEA, the French Atomic Energy Commission). CS offers its texpertise to industry in the areas of modeling and high performance computing on massively parallel machines by code optimization and processing of complex computing sequences.

For Turbomeca, manager of the MOSART program, the Simulation Center is a means of assisting suppliers and establishing a constructive partnership with them as they develop their expertise in the value chain. The PSC will also provide Turbomeca with additional computing resources at a competitive cost and a space for collaborative activities with its design service providers and its industrial partners.

For the Pau-Pyrénées Urban Community, its active involvement in the creation of the PSC reflects the strategic challenges in terms of competition and expansion of the region's influence. This involves the development and enhancement of expertise among local SMEs conducting high added value activities in the aerospace value chain, and enhancing local competitiveness by providing a complete and innovative design and simulation offer. The Pau-Pyrénées Urban community is honoring its commitment to deploying the MOSART program, thereby ensuring its implementation in the region as well as that of the Simulation Center in Pau. This illustrates the importance of centers of excellence in aeronautics and information and communication technologies (ICT) in the region, and the use of very high bandwidth infrastructures and networks.

Pau-Pyrénées Urban Area is the second largest conglomeration in the Aquitaine region, with 150,000 inhabitants and 14 municipalities. It is a public establishment for inter-municipality cooperation created on January 1, 2000. One of its major economic goals is to increase the competitiveness and attraction of the region by facilitating the relocation and establishment of businesses. This is achieved by supporting local sectors of excellence (which include aeronautics, geosciences and petroleum engineering, agribusiness, biotechnologies and advanced materials) by facilitating industry/university synergies and by developing joint programs.
