Digital Communication Systems

Digital Communication Systems

For a long time, in accordance with security requirements and state of the art, airspace was cut up in several areas allocated to different ATC centres. Communication Networks were settled in order to provide reliable communication between controllers and pilots and between controllers located in adjacent centres.

Tomorrow, Single European Sky initiative would set up a new paradigm, leading to an upgraded airspace organization and an improved information management.

The challenge is to increase the flow capacity thanks to a better use of airspaces, airports and advanced 4 D trajectories. This objective relies on a seamless connectivity of all stakeholders through performing networks in support of Digital Voice and Data Link. And simultaneously, it appears mandatory to guarantee the data security and the network reliability in order to insure the confidence of each stakeholder.

The objective of an innovative Digital Communications system is to provide the whole ATM Centres with the appropriate real-time Information to be shared between all participants in order to ensure reliable decision-making process and to improve safety and efficiency. This requirement includes the implementation of a Ground-Air-Ground communication network complying with the System-Wide Information Management concept, and the Network Enabled Capabilities, to the profit of both civil and military operational centres.

The main functional features address several specific characteristics related to operational and technical requirements.

Operational features
• High availability Communication network supporting wide area information sharing,
• Flexibility of the network management in order to adapt with changing organisations.

Technical features
• Improved reliability of the network in order to guarantee reliable communications handling,
• Adaptability of the system configuration to manage various operational users.

Cost Benefit Analysis
• Cost effective solutions thanks to design and implementation of new systems using IP technology,
• Accurate estimates of the operational and technical support during operational life cycle.

The system is designed to comply with the following essential objectives:
• protection adapted to sensitivity level of information,
• automatic and global supervision of the network,
• management of security parameters,
• data-link capability (for example: VDL or MIDS L 16),
• dedicated voice transmission using plain text or ciphered mode.

Our system design addresses the overall spectrum of Communication System as:
• controller position functionalities,
• specific interfaces or capabilities to WAN or specific Network ,
• specific demands related to Network Capabilities, to end users or remote transceivers, including particular layout regarding security issues.

The system management is mostly dedicated to day-to-day operations. It deals with availability and maintenance, status and configuration, monitoring, performance and Quality of Service (QoS). The major concern is reliability and security in accordance with new vulnerability risks regarding digital links.

Additionally to the supervision control, the main topics addressed by a system management are authentication, integrity, access control, confidentiality.

CS solutions

In order to optimise operational capabilities, technical availability and financial constraints, CS proposes a complete value chain including Consulting, Project Management, System Engineering, Deployment, Operational Training, System management, and Integrated Logistics Support.

Digital communication systems
CS digital solutions gather voice and data link functions in a single controller working position through a reliable Communication Switch.
A capacity to manage a range of operational configurations, including several technical functions is proposed.

Voice Communication Systems – Information Communication Systems
The SAF 3000 Communication System is based on state of the art digital equipments to bring the CWP with a very powerful system able to provide an answer to existing analog and future digital or IP networks. Each operational function can be implemented in an unique terminal or in dedicated equipments if requested, thanks to the flexible VCS architecture. These configurations are identified through a number, 3100 Back-up, 3200 – 3300 – 3400 for Main, and LR for Last Resort, with a letter such as T for Telephone, R for Radio.

SAF 3100 R – Back-up Radio VCS
SAF 3200 T R – Main VCS for small operational centres (Tower),
SAF 3300 T R – Main VCS for medium operational centres (Area Radar),
SAF 3400 T R – Main VCS for large operational centres (ACC, AOC, ARS),

Simulator VCS

VoiceP@ck is the solution to equip an ATC simulator, whatever the operational context, ACC, Area Radar Centre, Tower, for basic and advanced training.

Main customers

• ACC VCS for the DSNA (French ANSP)
• Airport Operations Centres VCS for the French Air Force
• NATO ACCS CAOC & ARS Secure VCS with THALES Norway
• G-A-G Radio Voice & Data Link Communication System for the French Air Force
• Back-up VCS for Belgocontrol
• Main RADIO VCS for the Missiles Test Ranges (up to 460 positions)

In 2004, CS acquired Diginext, a company specialized in the design and fabrication of complex communication systems. This acquisition allowed CS to bolster its position in the field of tactical data links, significantly enhancing its offering vis-à-vis the French military and NATO.
